Inscription.
On March 4, 1825, as Lafayette was being escorted into town from the Clarendon Bridge he passed by Liberty Point, a locally cherished historical site at the triangular plot formed by the acute intersection of Person and Bow Streets. On or near this site on June 20, 1775, a group of fifty-five patriots signed a declaration in opposition of British rule. Although popularly known as the Liberty Point Resolves, the document was actually named the Cumberland Association. Prior to his arrival in Fayetteville, Lafayette addressed Governor Burton in Raleigh and proclaimed: "On the first moment of my return to the blessed shores of America, I anticipated the pleasure to revisit this State and here to witness the prosperous result of the independence and self-government, the cry for which had been heard from North Carolina long before it was re-echoed in a Continental Congress." The Liberty Point document followed the Mecklenburg Declaration by just a month and preceded the Declaration of Independence by a little more than a year.
