Inscription.
This was the site of the North Augusta station of the Augusta-Aiken Railway, a trolley line that opened in 1902. It was one of only three "interurbans" in S.C., electrified railways that connected distinct urban areas. The 26-mi. line ran between Augusta, Ga. and Aiken, passing through Horse Creek Valley. A walkway connected the wooden station at this site to the Hampton Terrace Hotel, which stood nearby from 1903 to 1916.

The railway and hotel were developed by North Augusta founder James U. Jackson. Passenger as well as freight cars used the line. In 1912 a car was attacked 1 mi. S during a strike led by Augusta line workers. The line was racially integrated until the state required "Jim Crow" accommodations in 1913. Use declined as automobiles became common, and the line closed in 1929. The North Augusta station no longer stands.
