Saving Animals from Extinction
Riverbanks is a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Saving Animals from Extinction (SAFE) Program. SAFE is designed to strategically harness the collective power of the AZA and its members to lessen species declines around the world.
Penguins in Peril
African penguins are in trouble, having declined form as many as one million pairs as recently as the 1920s to less than 20,000 pairs in 2015, leading the AZA to designate it as a SAFE species.
Riverbanks' Role
Riverbanks works to lessen the decline of wild populations through its support of the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds' (SANCCOB) African Penguin Chick Bolstering Project. Over the last decade, nearly 4,000 chicks have been released. In 2014 eighty-two percent of rescued eggs and chicks were successfully released back into the wild.
