About 1,000 years ago, Indigenous people form dozens of regional villages began digging the pits here to gather chert. They shared a cultural identity that included similar languages, spiritual perspectives, pottery styles, farming strategies, and hunting methods. Families and friends probably met here each year for social reasons in addition to acquiring chert. These gatherings would have provided an opportunity to share meals, stories, music.
