Inscription. Stretching from the distant South Mountain Range, on your right, is Pennsylvania’s Conewego Valley. Before the Civil War, networks of safe houses across this valley sheltered freedom seekers escaping slavery via the underground Railroad. In 183, the mountains shielded the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia as the traveled north, invading Pennsylvania.
