"Charles Darwin might well have made his classic observations on the origin of species on Maui as well as the Galapagos Islands."
-Dr. Martin Griffin, Kipahulu Expedition photographer, 1967
The 1967 Kipahulu Expedition was the upper valley's first large scale scientific exploration. The expedition revealed numerous bird, plant, and insect species, including many new to science. These discoveries led to the remote rainforest being added to the national park and protected as the Kipahulu Valley Biological Reserve. Scientists continually monitor the reserve, which is one of the few intact rainforests left in Hawai'i.To protect endemic and endangered species, access is allowed via scientific permit.
" different species of these beautiful little birds have arisen by adapting themselves to special conditions and food supplies. Thus the Maui parrotbill for seed cracking the 'i'iwi with long curved beak and hollow tongue for probing tubular flowers."
