1. The River of Grass Marker

Inscription. The huge drainage basin that supplies the Everglades with water begins 240 miles north, near Orlando, Florida. Prior to man's intervention, Lake Okeechobee overflowed its banks during the wet season, initiating the summer pulse of water that fed "the River of Grass." In 1947, the southern end of the ecological system was set aside as Everglades National Park to preserve the unique plant and animal communities. The Park is but a remnant one-seventh of the original everglades.
