The Everglades is home to Native peoples, including the Miccosukee and Seminole. These lands and waters were home to their ancestors, the Tequesta and Calusa.
Moving on the water has been - and continues to be - central to the way of life for native communities here. Detailed knowledge of the waterways and expertise in fishing and hunting has helped people flourish in the Everglades.
Miccosukee people continue to live in the park today and operate businesses nearby. The Miccosukee Indian Village - just west of Shark Valley Visitor Center - offers exhibits about history and culture.

(Photo #1) Poling a dugout canoe has been the most common way to travel through the Everglades for thousands of years.
(Photo #2) Miccosukee tribal members helped develop the earliest air boats in the 1930's. They provided the first boat and drivers for Everglades Safari Park.
