Imagine it's 1941. Pennants wave in the breeze. Bunting adorns the lighthouse. As a parade of yachts enters the harbor, a cannon is fired to welcome them to the annual summer outing of the "Committee of One Hundred" - a social and educational club for businessmen.

Now look around. Boca Chita Key is no longer a private playground for the wealthy, but part of a national park preserved for all visitors. Today, only the ornamental lighthouse and other coral rock structures. remind us of this island's colorful past.

Nurturing Life and Discovery
Biscayne's diverse history spans 10,000 years. Its waters have seen pirates, explorers, and shipwrecks. It has sustained fishermen, farmers, and the Tequesta Indians. And, thanks to a hard-fought environmental battle during the 1960s, today it is a national park. Through it all, Biscayne's four ecosystems have nurtured an impressive variety of birds, plants, animals, and sea life unique to South Florida. The park provides a respite from hectic metropolitan life...a place to spot dolphins, manatees, American crocodiles, or just enjoy natural sounds in a quiet place.
