1. An Island Without Ghosts Marker
The island of Lana'i, seen here from above the sugar cane fields of the former Pioneer Mill, has always had close connections with West Maui. In ancient times, Maui ruler Kaka'alaneo lived along this coast. The chief's mischievous son, Kaulula'au, destroyed his father's crops of taro and sweet potatoes and uprooted valuable breadfruit plantings. At last the frustrated ruler banished his mischievous son to Lana'i, an island then inhabited by man-eating spirits. But the ingenious Kaulula'au came up with tricks to rid the island of the ghosts. Pleased with his son's courage, Kaka'alaneo forgave the boy. Kaulula'au mended his ways, became the ruler of Lana'i and followed his father as chief of Maui.
