1. Memorial Park Marker
Inscription.
This cemetery located S. Dowling and Edna Streets was the original cemetery for the City of Hallettsville. The land was owned by Mary Jane Hale Ballard who deeded it to the trustees of the "Hallettsville Graveyard" in 1870. Area pioneers were buried there until a new city cemetery was built. A monument in the center honors the county's heroes in battles of the Alamo, Goliad, Gonzales, and San Jacinto.
After 1898, the cemetery fell into disuse and weeds overgrew it in 1952, several civic groups persuaded the city to establish a public park there. A group of leading citizens, supervised the restoration of the Old City Cemetery as the Hallettsville Memorial Park The city and local garden club have maintained the park and grounds since 1952.
Margaret Hallet's remains were removed from a gravesite located on the Paul Appelt farm in the northwest section of the town and were re-interred in the Memorial Park on Memorial Day, 1952.
