1. Restoration of the Mill Race Marker
Inscription. At the turn of the 20th century, the Mill Race was a healthy stream with naturally vegetated banks. Over the years, as industries supported by the Mill Race came and went, the stream deteriorated to a condition of stagnant flow and siltation. In 2008, the city partnered with TDOT to restore the race to a more pristine condition.

Work to restore swift flow was completed by reconstructing the stream channel, correcting erosion damage, removing debris, and establishing a vegetated riparian buffer.

While the primary purpose of stream restoration is to enhance water quality, one of the delightful benefits is that wildlife, including reptiles, birds, and fish can move back into the habitat. The pictures below are by a local artist, Shanasha Acuρa.
