In recent years, Smithsonian scientists have focused on what the species requires for successful, managed breeding. Only a third of the female whooping cranes in human care consistently lay eggs. But what causes birds to lay or not lay eggs? By studying the birds' reproductive biology, hormones, and behavior, researchers can better understand such crucial elements as ideal habitat, courtship and pair bonding, and chick survival.

How can you help save this extraordinary species?
Your support of research, conservation, and breeding programs is an important component of our mission. Learning about these magnificent birds may encourage more people to become scientists and direct them towards conservation pathways. Think about how your everyday actions can impact the environment. Whooping cranes, like all birds, require healthy habitats, clean water, and safe migration.

Together, we can make a difference.
