1. Alibamo Indians Marker

Inscription.
Alabama takes its name from this tribe, whose settlements were located along the headwaters of the Alabama River. Early French colonists called them Alibamons, and engaged the tribe in trade at nearby Fort Toulouse. When the French abandoned that fort in 1763, several Alabama Indian towns relocated with them farther westward. The remaining Alabama Indians were forced to relocate east of the Coosa River following the Treaty of Fort Jackson (1814), which ended the Creek War.
