1. Arrival Marker

Inscription. We are not certain where exactly De Soto's ships landed in 1539. But descriptions in the expedition's records suggest it was probably here in Tampa Bay. What was that moment like? From the wooded shores, Uzita, Mocozo, and Tocobaga people watched the huge vessels enter their homeland, sails billowing. From the ships, soldiers, clerics, and laborers looked out at the dense mangrove forests and shell mound villages. The two worlds would soon collide--reshaping North America's cultural landscape.
