As they traveled, the expedition descended on Indigenous villages to gather intelligence, plunder supplies, and take captives. Their hostile reputation preceded them. Resistance grew.
The Indigenous people had lived and fought in this landscape for millennia. Moving quickly through familiar terrain, they outflanked the Spanish, hammering the enemy with close-fighting tactics. The attacks taught the Spanish a hard lesson, and predicted trouble to come.
