1. A Land Transformed Marker
Inscription. The De Soto expedition carved a devastating trail through what is now the southeastern United States. Although it spanned only four years, its legacy reverberates today.

Some of the expedition's impacts were immediate. De Soto's vicious tactics destroyed towns and left thousands of people dead from cruelty and exposure, battles and raids. Other changes unfolded more slowly, Introduced diseases and social destabilization contributed to the widespread collapse of ancient Indigenous cultures. And the chronicles of the expedition brought back descriptions of the region's rich natural resources--attracting European colonists who would further transform this land.

We live in a world shaped by the brutal path of De Soto.

Three Main Impacts
  • The expedition's chronicles contain priceless first hand descriptions of the extraordinary Indigenous societies lost to conquest and colonization.
  • Some domestic pigs escaped the expedition and became feral, transforming native habitats.
  • Expedition members and livestock spread deadly diseases such as smallpox to Indigenous populations who had no immunity.
