1. The Powhatan Creek Watershed Marker
Inscription. The Powhatan Creek watershed is recognized as the most environmentally significant natural resource on the James-York Peninsula. Many rare and threatened plants have been identified. The watershed is habitat to over 150 species of birds, including Eagle, Osprey, Great Blue Heron and Snowy Egret. Tremendous development pressures, and resulting losses of open spaces, have increased stormwater runoff, nutrient pollution, chemical contamination, effluent emissions, and soil erosion. These issues complicate the delicate balance between human habitation and ecosystem biodiversity. James City County adopted a Chesapeake Bay Ordinance to enact environmental regulations that preserve this vital, ecologically diverse watershed.
