1. Wetlands of the Greensprings Greenway Marker
Inscription. A perpetual Conservation Easement between James City County, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Williamsburg Land Conservancy protects approximately 100 acres of wetlands. Wetlands include swamps, marshes and bogs that typically support vegetation adapted to life in saturated soil conditions. Protected by the Chesapeake Bay Act, these wetlands perform critical ecological functions that purify stormwater and create diverse habitats for plants and animals. The trail was woven between neighborhoods and wetlands to provide an all-weather trail. In order to minimize impacts, special puncheon footbridges allow water to flow unrestricted through the site. By 1990, approximately 41% of Virginia's wetlands had been lost to development.

Erected by James City County Parks & Recreation.
