1. Stamford Park Homestead Marker
Inscription. Stamford Park Homestead is one of the last remaining substantial 19th century homes in Knox. It is a magnificent example of 19th century architecture featuring gothic gables, fretted barge boards, intricate wrought iron and five metre high ceilings.

Originally built in 1882 for Frederick Row, a member of a highly regarded early settlement local family, the homestead features seven large rooms, a bath room and an external kitchen. The former servants' quarters were located on the east side and originally included five rooms in two separate buildings, with only one still standing.

The internal walls are double brick with plaster linings, and the floors are of New Zealand Kauri. The slate fireplaces were rendered with marble and the ceilings feature original ceiling roses.

The south-east room with a lower ceiling is thought to be the original cottage on the site built in 1864. The homestead was in an advanced state of disrepair when it was acquired by Knox Council in 1988. Several rooms have now been sympathetically restored to give visitors an appreciation of the homestead as it was in its former glory.
