Who Built The Mounds?
Ancient Native Americans

When Were They Here?
During the Early to Middle Woodland Period: from around the year 500 BC to AD 500

What Did They Do At The Site? And Why?
Archaeologists have studied artifacts found at the site and investigated how the mounds were constructed. This information suggests that the site was used by ancient Native Americans for local and long distance trade, cooking, and other activities. However, primary function of the mounds appears to have been ceremonial, and people came to the site for ritual purposes. Archaeologists believe that the north and south village areas were occupied during the construction of the mounds.

Why Were They At This Place?
The Batesville Mounds site is located on a major river at the edge of the Historic Mississippi Delta Region in one of the most resource rich environments in ancient history. Being situated in the Loess Hills, and near the Mississippi Alluvial Valley, made this site a convenient location for a ceremonial center for the ancient Native Americans. It consisted of three different activity areas: habitation areas, platform mound areas, and conical mound areas.
