Resurrecting a volcano
Guilfoyle's Volcano lay dormant for over 50 years but now it's active once again.
RBGV planning for the restoration of the Volcano site started in 2006, when the Myer Foundation and other private sponsors pledged support for the project. Designed by Andrew Laid RBGV Landscape Architect construction commenced in 2009.
There are almost 17,000 plants with 250 different species including almost 100 Australian natives.
Two-thirds of the plants were propagated in the Gardens Nursery.
Using mulch helps the plant beds retain water. Over 150 tons of mulch has been used on-site. This includes brown rubble hornfels and crushed bricks and terra cotta tiles, which are used on the lava flows and pathways.
Up at the Volcano rim bluestone blocks had to be re-set to make the reservoir water-tight. Its holding capacity is 1.3 million litres.
The Volcano provides a landscape feature for recreation and education pursuits and contributes to water conservation and the health of the Gardens.
