1. The Italian Heritage Farmhouse Marker

Inscription. Kern County had a surge of Italian immigrants in the 19th century engaged in farming, ranching, and working on the railroad.

Kern’s Italians prospered in the Mediterranean climate making their own wine, olive oil, sausage and cheese. They became pioneers in ranching and farming. They also became leaders in law, education, and business. Kern’s Italian community is known for its strong work ethic, patriotism, and Catholic faith.

This small house was built in 1940 in Pumpkin Center by John Bugni, a native of Piedmont Italy, for his new bride Antonia Fachin. It was donated by nephew Hunter Haley. Restoration was supported by the Italian Heritage Dante Assoc., the Italian Heritage Foundation and 30 local families.
