For the past 17 years, this nation has seen thousands of people fleeing from the unbearable oppression of a communist regime.

We are these people. We are the Cubans, who left behind family, friends and all our possessions, in search of freedom and opportunity. And only in America, the land of endless opportunity, have we found the rights that we lost in our homeland.

We are here today to express our immense gratitude to this country and the warm welcome that you extended us.

‘Muchas Gracias America!

For thanks to you, our needy found shelter, food and care. Thanks to you, our most basic human right—the right to vote and participate in the democratic process, has been restored. Thanks to you, the right to free enterprise has been regained in greater potential than ever expected. Thanks to you, we totally enjoy once again complete freedom of speech, and the right to openly express our opinions and educate our children.

Muchas Gracias America for offering us, Cubans, the opportunity to start all over again in a free world as members of a free society. We appreciate it all.

Hooray, U.S.A.
