Building a Horse Drawn Wagon
Building farm wagons took many skilled craftsmen and artisans. Some were specialists and some were skilled in more than one trade. Taking care of an repairing wagons, carriages and other equipment was a necessity to keep a farm or plantation operating.
Axeman cuts the trees needed to build the wagon; oak, pine, chestnut and poplar.
Sawyer cuts lumber to the size needed for the Wheelwright, and Carpenter to finish and use.
Carpenter plans and assembles the body of the wagon and works with the Wheelwright on the running gear, axles, spokes, rims and hubs.
Leather worker makes the tack: harness, reins, collar, girth, blinders and trace used to control the horse pulling the wagon.
Wheelwright makes the wheel spokes, hubs, skeins, fellows, rims and assembles and mounts the wheels.
Blacksmith makes the needed hardware: nails, nuts, bolts, rods, brackets, plates, springs, chains, rims and fittings.
Farrier/blacksmith makes the horse shoes, shoe nails, buckles, bits and rings. He also trims the horse's hoofs and shoes the horse.
Groom or stable hand takes care of the horse: brushing, watering and feeding.
