Inscription.
Bessie Crayton, born Mary Elizabeth Catt, stated, "We are not marching for effect, but it is to be a band of serious, earnest women, striving to show the injustice of the present voting system of the state."

Women were not the only group to march in Lima's Square in the 1914 parade; black and white men, as well as children, marched on behalf of the right to vote. The right to vote for white women was ratified in the 19th Amendment in August of 1920. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 gave the right to vote to Black Americans at this time.
