Inscription. This was the site of "Aspen Hall", boyhood home of Navy hero Robley Dunglison Evans. Built by Henry Dillon for Robley's parents, Dr. Samuel Andrew Jackson Evans and wife, Sally Ann. It was completed shortly after Robley's birth on August 18, 1846. Following the death of Dr. Evans, the family moved to Alexandria, VA.

At age 15, Evans gained acceptance at the U.S. Naval Academy. In Civil War combat, he sustained wounds while leading a Marine attack on Fort Fisher, NC. Appointed Commander in 1878, his ships were: Yorktown, New York, and Iowa. He commanded the U.S.S. Iowa in the Battle of Santiago, 1898, during the Spanish American War.
