1. House of Reformation Marker

Inscription. The House of Reformation for Colored Boys opened in 1873 as the South's first Blacks-only reformatory to remove Black children from adult prisons. As a segregated institution, it denied education and protections afforded white youth. Many endured forced labor and abuse. In 1960, Robert Myers, a 13-year-old Black boy, sued the state declaring segregation illegal and won. Today this site calls us to remember and defend those harmed by institutional racial violence.
