The Plant
Needs: Full Sun, plant Ό" deep, sow in mid to late spring, after threat of heavy frost is over.
Threats: Aphids, Carrot Rust Fly, Root knot Nematodes, Alternaria Leaf Spots, Carrot Yellows, and Root Rots
The Benefits
Good source of fiber and vitamin A
Contains Carotenoids which have been linked to fighting cancer
Best grown with alliums, onions and other plants with strong smells that will ward off pests
The Cultural Connection
The belief that carrots make your eyesight better is a myth. In WWII, British pilots were trying to conceal the use of radar, a new technology. Whenever they were asked how their pilots could find things at night so well, they told people their pilots ate lots of carrots, which helped them see.
