Macaws
Home of the Macaw
Macaws are found in Central and South America. Their usual habitat is the rainforest. Some species prefer savanna-like habitats.
Behavior
Macaws live in pairs and are monogamous. They are extremely loud. Their voices carry over long distances. Their beaks are large and powerful.
Life Span
They can live up to 100 years, but they average 50-65 years.
Types of Macaws
Scarlet Macaws have bright red and blue feathers and are perhaps the most well known of the group.
The Green Wing Macaw, resembles the Scarlet Macaw, but has a larger beak and green wings.
The Blue and Gold Macaw, as the name implies, has a golden chest and blue back and wings.
Military Macaws have green body feathers with burst of red feathers above their beak.
Status
Most macaws are endangered in the wild. Five species are already extinct.
In the past 30 years, CWPZOO has regularly bred 3 species of macaw. They are not currently on our "to breed" list.
