Flat Rock in Henderson County, North Carolina — The American South (South Atlantic)
A Mountain Farm
| | Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site | |
Lilian "Paula" Sandburg became interested in farming while the Sandburgs lived in Michigan, where she started a small herd of dairy goats. The family moved to North Carolina in 1945 for its warmer climate. Connemara provided shelter and pasture for their goats, stables for their horses, and a space for gardens. The distance between the busy farm and quiet house gave the author solitude to write.
As you approach the barn listen for sounds of farm life. What do you hear?

Lilian "Paula" Sandburg employed a series of farm laborers. They lived with their families in this green home. Although Mrs. Sandburg employed help on the farm, she managed the daily operations. Ruins of the Memminger-era Ice House are in the front yard of this home. Photograph by June Glenn, Jr.
We shall do our best to do somethingto leave some thing that we have produced here on earth as a bequest! But we'll remember that the life we live is more important than the works we leave. Lilian "Paula" Sandburg in a letter to Carl Sandburg, 1908
