Just as snakes have important cultural ties in many countries, they also have important religious ties. Snakes have been worshipped and have been believed to have brought good things to those who worshipped them.
Many Native American tribes worshipped snakes for many reasons. The Hopi Indians danced while the priests held rattlesnakes in their mouths during their rain ritual.
The Mayan Indians of Mexico worshipped the god Quetzalcoatl, the fanged and plumed serpent. His image was carved into walls and on their temples.
Ancient Egyptians also believed in the magical powers of snakes to bring rain. The image of the cobra was found on the head dress of the emperor.
