Inscription.
South Carolina's state tree, the Sabal Palmetto, thrives in sandy soils and coastal regions. This hardy palm can grow up to 65 feet tall and withstand both hurricane-force winds and brief periods of freezing temperatures, thanks to its flexible trunk and sturdy fan-shaped fronds. Native Americans and early settlers used nearly every part of this versatile tree—from its edible palm hart and berries to its leaves for weaving baskets and building shelters. The Sabal Palmetto continues to play a vital role in coastal ecosystems, providing nesting sites for birds and bats.
