Harlingen City Cemetery. . , Recent History , The west section of the Harlingen City Cemetery was first surveyed in 1962 by the Tip-O-Texas Genealogical Society., On May 17, 2008, members of the newly formed Hispanic Genealogy Group agreed to photograph and transcribe all of the tombstones here, as a project for the Centennial Celebration in 2010 of the incorporation of the City of Harlingen., A grid pattern was established in the east section, so that the volunteers could work at their own pace and time (see the map.), The majority of the photographing was completed before July 23, 2008, when Hurricane Dolly struck the city, destroying trees, overturning and damaging tombstones, and covering some of the flat markers with earth. Serious cleanup efforts by Harlingen Proud and other volunteers helped restore most of the cemetery property., The City Parks and Recreation Department, which is responsible for the cemetery, has supported all of the efforts of the Hispanic Genealogy Group. The west section of the Harlingen City Cemetery was first surveyed in 1962 by the Tip-O-Texas Genealogical Society.

On May 17, 2008, members of the newly formed Hispanic Genealogy Group agreed to photograph and transcribe all of the tombstones here, as a project for the Centennial Celebration in 2010 of the incorporation of the City of Harlingen.
