1. Invasives Marker
What are invasive species?
Invasive species are plants and animals that dominate the ecosystem, are often brought here from somewhere else, and prevent native species from thriving.
European Frogbit
These (heart-shaped leaves) were discovered in the estuary in 2017. It is actively managed through mechanical removal. Without management, this plant will form a dense mat on the surface of the water and block sunlight and oxygen from filtering down the water column.
Phragmites
Phragmites is a prolific grower, and without management, it can overtake native plants and dominate the landscape.
Zebra Mussel
This mussel lives in clusters, and these clusters can clog water intake pipes and damage equipment at power and water plants. Zebra mussel can also alter water quality, increase harmful algae, and decrease food sources for native mussel species.
