1. The Stronghouse Marker
Inscription.
Originally from the Woolford Family of Belvoir Plantation on Horn Point Road, this building was moved to High Street in Cambridge after the mid-1800s. It was later gifted to DCHS in the 1960s. Careful evaluation has suggested that it was once used as a smokehouse to smoke and store foods, though a fire appears to have charred its beams a little more than intended on the interior. Over the years, it was also used for secure storage of household goods, hams, sugar, and other valuables, resulting in its alternate name, the "Stronghouse." This name, however, serves a second purpose, as it was believed by one historian to have been used as a place to store weapons and ammunition in the War of 1812.
