"Born into slavery on April 11, 1811, in Bourbon County, Kentucky, Benjamin Henderson took his former master's last name.... At the age of 26, he... purchased his freedom for $250.00.... [After moving to Jacksonville,] Benjamin became a teamster and was involved with the Underground Railroad, transporting runaways from approximately 1841 to about 1858. He often used his house as a station."
