Reverend John Holcomb Forbes, also, Mrs. Mary Henry Nance Forbes. , The Rev. John Holcomb Forbes a beloved and well-known Methodist minister in the mid-to-late 1800s, was a local preacher in Danville and the surrounding areas for more than fifty years., Rev. Forbes was an early preacher and one of the trustees on the deed for Rock Springs Methodist Episcopal Church, which, is now Rock Springs United Methodist Church at Ringgold, VA., He is also remembered as the "dear old Methodist preacher" at the Connally Meeting House, now Connally United Methodist Church, in Milton, NC., During The War Between the States, Rev. Forbes was in charge of the Confederate convalescent hospitals in Danville. He was assisted by Rev. George Dame, and a young nurse, Anne Eliza Johns. Major William Sutherlin employed Rev. Forbes to minister to the spiritual needs of the soldiers. Rev. Forbes spoke at Major Sutherlin's funeral., In the history of the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge, of which Rev. Forbes was a member, he is remembered for his ministry to the prisoners incarcerated in Danville during the war. The prisoners found him a friend and brother, ready to meet both their spiritual and temporal needs., He was known as a Good Samaritan, ever ready to extend the helping hand to those in distress. He sought those in the lowly walks of life, that he might give them words of good cheer. He had a reputation for powerful preaching and singing., He married Mary Henry Nance in 1840. They raised a family of nine children. According to his obituary his legacy, and that of his wife Mary, is of a well-spent life. Their influence abides the test of time. Descendants who placed this plaque are a testament to both John and Mary., Originally this cemetery was part of the last Forbes home place. John and Mary and some of their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren are buried here, as well as descendants of Mary's sister, Elizabeth Nance Fitzgerald.
