1. Victoria Public Library Marker
Mounted on the library's exterior. (Note the photographer's reflection in the marker.)
Inscription. The Library was built in 1887 - the year of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee - on the old parade ground used by the local militia, yet it was not completed until 1889. It was reputed to have cost UK £568. Public events such as cultural concerts are held on the library grounds, commonly referred to as the Library Tennis Court. (Marker Number #14.)

More about this marker. The library is located on Front Street in the historic downtown section of Cockburn Town, the capital city of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The library occupies the block of Front Street between Prison Street and Victoria Street, to the west of Her Majesty's Old Prison.
 
Regarding Victoria Public Library. The Victoria Public Library is a charming, compact building surrounded by the grassy, open, public grounds and event space known as the Library Tennis Court.

Across Front Street, the Victoria Library overlooks the west coast of Grand Turk Island and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean.

The library building, as with many of the British Colonial-era structures in Cockburn Town, withstood the forces of 2008's Category 4 Hurricane Ike remarkably well. Newer buildings and homes on Grand Turk Island sustained often catastrophic damage. Fencing along the library grounds was toppled or carried off by the storm.

The Historic Marker can be seen on the front of the building in the lower right corner, partially hidden by the open door.

The September 2008 storm left much of Grand Turk in similar or worse conditions.
