Family Crypt. . , The Livingston family crypt, built near here around 1740, served as the resting place for the Livingstons of Clermont for over a century. Robert the Builder, his wife Catherine, Robert the Judge, and Margaret Beekman were all interred here, as were Chancellor Robert R. Livingston, his children, and their spouses., After a series of break-ins in the late 1870s, Clermont Livingston hired army veterans to remove some remains and reinter them in a vault at St. Paul's church in Tivoli, New York. Which remains were moved is a lingering mystery. Robert L. Livingston, Margaret Maria Livingston, and Eugene Livingston are among those left in the crypt. It is believed that Chancellor Livingston was moved to the church vault. After the exhumations, Clermont filled in and sealed off the crypt., [Captions:] , One of the last Livingstons laid to rest in the crypt was Eugene Livingston. A cousin who resided on an estate south Clermont, Eugene joined the army at 17 during the civil War in 1862. He had not left camp in New York City when he fell ill. In April, he was discharged from the army with severe tuberculosis and died later that year., It was Clermont's (pronounced Clement) decision to move the bodies of his ancestors, and, on his death, he was interred in the same church vault. His son, John Henry, had the church vault sealed as well. Subsequent Livingstons, including John Henry, were buried in the church graveyard.
