Fishtown Historic District
Settled by Native Americans, Swedes, and English prior to the founding of Pennsylvania in 1681. The Fishtown Historic District encompasses the historic working-class neighborhood that grew from fishing hamlets on the Delaware River. The waterfront became a regional center of shipbuilding. Home to Philadelphia's premier shipbuilder, William Cramp & Sons Ship and Engine Building Company, from 1830 to 1927. The industrial revolution added textile, iron, glass, and sugar manufacturing.
