Inscription.
At the beginning of the 20th Century, when wood was the main heating fuel, Quebec farmers regularly crossed the ice on Lake Temiskaming with sleigh loads of cord wood drawn by teams of horses. Their goal was to sell the wood to Haileybury households.

As they approached the Town they headed for this natural ramp at the foot of Marcella Street. This was the “Winter Entrance” to Haileybury.

But time changes everything. During the 1950s, oil and natural gas began to replace wood as a fuel source. Soon the “Winter Entrance” became obsolete.

About that time, Haileybury Town Councillor Jim Whelan (1957-64), an avid boater himself, noted the trend of tourists trailering their boats. He suggested to Council that the old Winter Road ramp be converted to a boat launching ramp. “Cover the surface with concrete” he said and they agreed.

In 2001, the Town of Haileybury and the Haileybury Heritage Museum decided to recognize the century long dual purpose of this historic entrance to and from the Town of Haileybury. It is dedicated in memory and recognition of Councillor James (Jim) Welan who spearheaded the project which transformed the “Winther Entrance” to Haileybury into a “Summer Entrance from Haileybury to Lake Temiskaming”.
