Mistley Cobble Wall
How did these rocks get to Mistley?
The quayside on the river opposite is known as 'Baltic Wharf'. Ships from Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea traded here for years. These ships needed ballast to balance and float at the right height out of the water: what is the easiest ballast to find and load - cobbles off a handy beach. The beaches south of Oslo have many cobbles of rhomb porphyry. This wall may have been a useful way of tidying up and using old ballast dumped in the river and quayside.
