1. The Medal of Honor Marker
Notably the Congressional Medal of Honor is awarded to a small percentage of remarkable individuals.
The only President to have been awarded the Medal of Honor was Theodore Roosevelt, who was awarded, posthumously, for his actions in the Spanish-American War.
The first and only woman to have been awarded the Medal of Honor [is] Dr. Mary Walker. Dr. Walker was recognized for her service as a surgeon in field hospitals during the Civil War.
The first African-American to have been awarded the Medal of Honor was William Harvey Carney, who was recognized for his bravery in saving the American flag in 1863 during the Civil War.
As of 2020, only 3,506 individuals have been awarded the Medal of Honor. Nineteen of these heroes received a second award, fourteen received two separate Medals for two separate actions and five received both the Navy and the Army Medals of Honor for the same action. This prestigious honor duly recognizes their conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity, putting their own life at risk above and beyond the call of duty to protect and defend the United States of America.
