Pioneer Park: Oak Woodland Restoration. . When settlers first came to this part of Illinois in the 1830's, they discovered vast stretches of prairie land with small pockets of valuable woodlands interspersed along the streambanks. The wooded areas were settled first due to the availability of timber resources to build homes and to burn for fuel. The pre-settlement woodlands were mainly comprised of a canopy of Oaks and Hickory and an understory of native shrubs and wildflowers. The settlers altered the natural cycle within these woodlands by suppressing fire, clearing land for pasture and farming, and introducing foreign species of plant material. These activities upset the balance of the native woodland and the creatures that lived within that environment. , , Today, many woodlands have been overtaken by invasive species that inhibit growth of native flora. By shading the forest floor and creating excessive root competition, these non-natives reduce the chance of survival for native wildflowers, shrubs and tree saplings. Native plant species are valuable not only for their beautybut for their contribution to the habitat of native wildlife.
