In the past, driving timber down the Raquette River was a major operation, and water needed to be dammed to run logs in the spring., A dam was built in 1870 at the Setting Pole Rapids that flooded the river and lake valley in widely varying levels of ten feet or more during the next 60 years., In 1933, Setting Pole Dam was reconstructed and a stable: water level was set for Raquette Pond, Simon Pond and Tupper Lake., The logging industry relied on these same waterways to carry logs to mill towns along the Raquette River.
