About the Glenridge Quarry Naturalization Site
Welcome to the Glenridge Quarry Naturalization Site. The 44.6 hectares surrounding you represents a community vision that transformed a former landfill into one of Ontario's first "Green Sites". The building materials used here are made from recyclable materials where possible.

Our Community's Vision: The building practices used by the contractors also represented a commitment to reducing overall waste and respecting the environment. This active commitment to the "3 R's": Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, has created a unique place where visitors can experience the diversity of nature within the heart of Niagara region.

The community's vision includes:
- creating a usable public space
- creating nature-based education opportunities for children
- Using native building materials
- Using native plants with minimal maintenance requirements
- Connecting the site with other regional amenities such as the Bruce Trail

A Fascinating History: The site where you stand was a privately owned quarry between

1957 and 1972 and was a municipal landfill between 1976 and 2002. While these prior uses benefited the community, they also had negative impacts such as noise, truck traffic, and odours. The site's proximity to major institutional, commercial, and residential developments magnified these impacts.

The Site Today: Today, this site offers a variety of educational and recreational activities for visitors to enjoy. Walkers and photographers can experience spectacular views of Niagara region.

Children can take an educational adventure through our very own "solar system" or a fascinating journey through the world of weather in the Children's Science and Nature Area. There is also a renewable energy exhibit, a heritage arboretum, a bird and butterfly meadow, and a working sundial.

Niagara Region is proud to dedicate the Glenridge Quarry Naturalization Site to the community of Niagara, and honoured to thank the people who helped make this vision a reality.
