1. Exceptionally Old Grave Markers Marker
De oudste graftekens op deze begraafplaats komen uit de 17e en 18e eeuw. Zij zijn allemaal van hardsteen. Ook de manier waarop de tekst is aangebracht heeft veel overeenkomsten. Op de meeste stenen staat: "Hier Leyt Begraven", de naam van de overledene en de sterfdatum. Een voorbeeld daarvan is de steen van Trijntie Hendriks. Opvallend is dat we zelden een geboortedatum zien. Dat vond men misschien niet zo belangrijk. In een enkele geval is de leeftijd wel te herleiden. Bijvoorbeeld bij de steen links voor, van Adriaan Cornelis Rijks. Daar staat onderaan: "out wesende 72 jaren". En soms wordt de leeftijd heel precies aangegeven, zoals bij Marytie Muller (rechts): "out synde 58 jaare, 3 maanden en 23 dagen"
Afwijkend
Toch waren er toen ook al afwijkende grafstenen. Een kleine puzzel is de steen met de letters H L B G, wat staat voor Hier Leyt Begraven. Bovenaan staan de initialen van de overledene, daaronder M (maand) 3 en D (dag) 16 en het jaartal 1738. Deze persoon is dus overleden op 16 maart 1738. De steen heeft overigens ook de kenmerkende vorm die vroeger veel gezien werd in het Waddenzeegebied. Zie ook het groepje grafstenen hiernaast. Een sterfdatum wordt ook wel aangegeven als: is gerust. Voorbeelden zijn de grafstenen van Lammert Joosten Pelt (1689) en Aeljen Jacobs Janbroer "huysvrouw" van Comelis Kooter uit 1781. In de top van de steen staan vaak eenvoudige tekens, zoals een kruis bij een gelovige persoon of een merkteken. Zo'n merkteken was eigenlijk een soort familiehandtekening.
Marytie Muller
Een rijkere bewerking zien we op de grafsteen van Marytie Muller (1703-1762). Vrouwen speelden nauwelijks een rol in het openbare leven en alleen daarom al is deze steen met allure bijzonder. Misschien komt dat omdat Marytie respect afdwong. Zij heeft namelijk flink van zich laten horen toen haar man onterecht gevangen werd gehouden in Callantsoog. Zij richtte zich zelfs tot de Staten van Holland en heeft daarmee haar man weer vrij gekregen.
Exceptionally Old Grave Markers
The oldest grave markers in this cemetery date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. They are all made of bluestone. The way the text is applied also has many similarities. Most stones say: Hier Leyt Begraven (Here Lies Buried), the name of the deceased, and the date of death. An example of this is the stone of Trijntie Hendriks. It is striking that we rarely see a date of birth. People perhaps did not find that as important. In a single case, the age can be deduced. For example, on the stone at the front left, belonging to Adriaan Cornelis Rijks. At the bottom, it says: "out wesende 72 jaren" (being 72 years old). And sometimes the age is indicated very precisely, as with Marytie Muller (right): out synde 58 jaare, 3 maanden en 23 dagen (being 58 years, 3 months, and 23 days old).
Deviations
Yet there were also deviating gravestones back then. A small puzzle is the stone with the letters H L B G, which stands for Hier Leyt Begraven (Here Lies Buried). Above that are the initials of the deceased, below that M (month) 3 and D (day) 16, and the year 1738. This person therefore passed away on March 16, 1738. The stone also has the characteristic shape that was often seen in the Wadden Sea region in the past. See also the group of gravestones next to this. A date of death is sometimes also indicated as: 'is gerust' (has found rest). Examples include the gravestones of Lammert Joosten Pelt (1689) and Aefjen Jacobs Janbroer, huysvrouw (housewife/wife) of Cornelis Kooter from 1781. Simple symbols are often found at the top of the stone, such as a cross for a religious person or a house mark. Such a mark was actually a kind of family signature.
Marytie Muller
We see a richer craftsmanship on the gravestone of Marytie Muller (17031762). Women played barely any role in public life, and for that reason alone, this stone is particularly elegant. Perhaps this is because Marytie commanded respect. She made her voice clearly heard when her husband was wrongfully imprisoned in Callantsoog. She even addressed the States of Holland directly and succeeded in getting her husband released.
