1. The Land Marker

Inscription.
The Tug Fork River is 159 miles long, with approximately 90 of those miles running along West Virginia's southwest border with Kentucky. Because of its rough terrain and steep hills, Tug Valley was one of the last places to have settlements in early America.

The events of the feud took place on either side of the border in Pike County, Kentucky, as well as what is currently Mingo County, West Virginia. While both Hatfields and McCoys lived on either side of the river, the conflict was between the West Virginia Hatfields and the Kentucky McCoys.
