1. Morgan Park & Recreation During Segregation Marker

Inscription. When the Morgan Park neighborhood was established in 1917 to house the administrators and faculty of Morgan College (now, Morgan State University), segregation was law and racism was rampant. The neighborhood came under attack from white residents in the surrounding communities. Black families stood ground and kept moving in. The Morgan Park Improvement Assc was formed by 1930, with committees like finances, political action, and homes/gardens. Parents found the Junior Partners Club to organize family group outings in Herring Run. With strength in numbers, Black families enjoyed rest and recreation in Herring Run, access often denied in other parks. This plaque and trail are brought to you by Friends of Herring Run Parks, dedicated to preserving and celebrating the nature, cultural heritage, and legacy of the park for those who came before us and those yet to come.
